Isili's copper history

In the second half of the nineteenth century a coppersmith of Isili, Nicolau Porcu, in partnership with Battista Fois Villacidro, opens a foundry in the country, which will go on, with ups and downs, until it closed in 1921. Along with these workshops people continues to work, at least until the early years of the second World War, in Cuglieri (Antonio Casule and Battista Biancu), in Tempio (the Anziani brothers), in Orani (Bruno), in Tresnuraghes (Marini), in Villanova Monteleone (one of the Marini of Tresnuraghes and Solinas), in Sassari (Palmieri), probably descendants of artisans from the peninsula.
In the sixties of the twentieth century we find a situation where the only Isili remains active in Sardinia working copper. The new materials impose themselves, and determine in those years a slow but steady abandonment of the object in copper. Around the eighties of the 900 are still in Isili a dozen craftsmen and thirty retailers. This number is gradually declining, due to the abandonment of the new generations.
Currently there are only two Isili artisans who keep alive this ancient art.
